Turf Is Done, Raiders Are Home

The Raiders 2007 season home opener versus South Plantation High School will be played on the newly-installed artificial surface, Field Turf.

Aquinas and the Paladins have met 14 times since 1983 with the Raiders leading the neighborhood rivalry with a perfect 14 wins and no losses record.

In the 1986 game this hard-fought series was marred by several brawls between the players  with officials calling the game with 48 seconds left.

The 2007 Raiders are counting on their highly-touted backfield of Jeremiah Harden, Giovanni Bernard, James White and Ronnie Kennedy to continue their dominance in this match up.

Aquinas junior quarterback Ryan Becker comes into this contest after a successful debut in last week's victory against Cardinal Gibbons. Becker passed for 262 yards and two touchdown passes (65, 85 yards) to Philip Pierre-Louis.

South Plantation (1-0) opened their season with a 35-14 victory over the Western Wildcats.

Raider fans have voted and close to 75% predict that the Raiders will be undefeated in 2007. Another 20% of voters believe that the Raiders will suffer only one loss during the regular season.

Aquinas wins in a thriller, 24-13

In the closest Catholic Bowl in recent memory, the Raiders rallied in the 4th quarter to beat rival Cardinal Gibbons, 24-13.

Junior Ryan Becker, making his varsity debut, threw for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Raiders. Philip Pierre-Louis caught both touchdown passes (65 and 85 yards) and finished the game with 3 catches for 155 yards.

On defense the Raiders were led by Conor O'Neill who recorded 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss. But the biggest plays on defense came from the secondary. Interceptions by John Carr and Rodney Gillis, who returned his pick for a touchdown, sealed the game for Aquinas.

One of the main topics of discussion on Friday was the heat. Both teams suffered cramping and heat related injuries due to the 4pm start. There was no refuge from the oppressive heat as even the Gibbons press box was a glorified sauna.
