
What you see above is the result of me testing out some new screen capture software for windows. It's called MWsnap. It works pretty well. The images are from the opening titles of Eisenstein's film, Alexander Nevsky. I plan on using the software to help me understand shot composition in classic films. I am struck with this desire after creating a very rough cut of my first narrative video in quite a while. I am determined to figure out what makes a "professional film" seem professional and what makes an "amateur film/ video" amateur. Perhaps there will be screen captures/comparisons/analysis when I finish up a final version of my yet-untitled video.

Amateur videos are done with mostly medium or long shots (because the lenses are so wide and no-one takes the time to zoom in). Even when people zoom, they never think to zoom to the front of the lens on a non-professional camera. So with so many people using the
Imagine how much more awkward this composition would look if it was twice as far away and the bodies were only half the size...
